The Sixth Mistake in Bathroom Design

A little while back, I wrote about Five Common Mistakes in Bathroom Designs. At Beautiful Habitat, we design a lot of bathroom renovations every year and therefore see a lot of bad bathroom designs in the “before” stage.

Last week, our design team went to Chicago for an in-depth training with our cabinet company. We stayed at a lovely hotel, that overall executed a dynamic and fun interior design in the bedroom space.

However, the bathroom had a major mistake – and one that would drive me crazy if in my own home. So I want to take this opportunity to warn and educated everyone about it.

Mistake 6: Not Planning the Sink and Faucet Alignment

Bathroom Design Mistakes

There are actually several factors to consider in the selection of the faucet and sink that will work together. I mean, who else has been splashed with water by a poor sink and faucet combination?? And usually in a public bathroom, right?

You need to plan for the rim of the sink and the spout length over the sink. You should also consider the spout height and or arc, if a gooseneck design. And if the faucet is higher, consider where and how the water will land in the sink and whether that will cause unwanted splashing.

In this particular mistake, the faucet was too far back and/or the spout was too short. Either way, the result is that the spout barely extends over the rim of the sink.  The issue this creates is that there is no room for handwashing under the rim of the bowl, inside the sink itself.

I have small hands and there is no room to extend or move my fingers inside of the sink. Instead, I had to pull my hands above the rim, which then results in water all over the bathroom countertop.

The fix:

Do your homework and do your math. Be certain that the faucet and sink rim alignment allow for plenty of clearance for easy access and use. Or better yet, Hire an Interior Designer to handle these important details for you.

Here is the rest of the room by the way – it was lovely. Just a fail on the bathroom sink.
