Interior Designer or Kitchen Designer?
Full-Service Interior Design vs. Kitchen Designer: Understanding the Differences
Designing a kitchen is no small task. It requires careful planning, attention to detail, and knowledge of the latest trends and technologies. If you’re considering a kitchen renovation or remodeling project, working with a professional kitchen designer or interior designer can make all the difference.

When many homeowners think about designing and remodeling their dream kitchen, they know that they need help. A kitchen design is very technical – involving mechanical systems like plumbing and electrical. Also – a cabinet or countertop is a very “fixed” thing. It can’t be changed or retuned if it wasn’t planned well and doesn’t fit. But does your project require a kitchen designer or an interior designer? And how are they different?
What Does a Kitchen Designer Do?
A kitchen designer focuses specifically on the layout and cabinetry of the kitchen. Many kitchen designers work through cabinet showrooms or kitchen retailers, with expertise centered on designing cabinetry configurations and specifying cabinet products.

They typically help with:
- Cabinet layout and configuration
- Cabinet styles and finishes
- Basic appliance placement
- Countertop selection
- Cabinet hardware
While kitchen designers are experts in cabinetry, their scope is usually limited to the kitchen itself and the products their showroom carries. They may not address how the kitchen relates to the rest of the home, architectural changes outside cabinetry, lighting plans beyond basic fixtures, or flooring and adjacent living spaces.
Kitchen designer are specialists – they really know their cabinet lines and how to design a very functional kitchen. They may or may not have interior design education – this can vary.
They can almost always refer you to an installer, but they do not coordinate or act as your liaison during the renovation of your home.

This Kitchen in this Arvada home was designed by a Kitchen Designer at a local cabinet company. But the homeowner wanted to renovate and update the entire home. They contacted us to design the rest of the spaces. We worked with what the Kitchen Designer had provided and built the rest of the home design to flow.

The kitchen was very well designed and offered some creative solutions. This Kitchen Designer was really good. But they couldn’t help our client with the other spaces. Our clients needed a Full- Service Interior Designer to complete their vision.
What Does an Interior Designer Do?
Interior design focuses on both the function and the aesthetics of a home. A designer considers how a space flows, how it feels, and how it works – including and beyond the kitchen.
A professionally trained interior designer typically holds a two- or four-year degree in interior design, with education that includes space planning, construction fundamentals, and kitchen and bathroom design. This background allows designers to think beyond the surface details and address the structure and functionality of a space.
For remodeling or new construction projects, interior designers often collaborate with architects, builders, and contractors to ensure the vision is carried through every detail.

A full-service interior designer may:
- Plan space layouts and traffic flow through a space
- Design kitchens, bathrooms, and built-ins
- Select cabinetry, finishes, fixtures, and materials
- Create detailed drawings and specifications
- Understanding of building codes, and safety required for renovations
- Create lighting and Reflective Ceiling Plans (RCP) for the location of all lighting and switching
This Westminster home is the closest that we have to a “just” kitchen design. We designed the kitchen, but it is also open to the family room and fireplace.

This is very often the case in Denver-area homes – nearly all the homes from the 1960’s on have open floor plans. This makes it nearly impossible to renovate only the kitchen. We usually need to consider at minimum the fireplace in the adjacent family room, but typically the whole main floor.
Kitchen Designer or Interior Designer, A Simple Way to Understand the Difference
Think of it this way.
- A full-service interior designer designs how a space works and looks from start to finish.
- A kitchen designer designs the cabinetry and layout of the kitchen.
Another note is that often an Interior design is paid by the hour or a design fee. And most often a Kitchen Designer makes a commission on selling the cabinets.
What Is Full-Service Interior Design?
Full-service interior design is particularly valuable for whole-home remodels, kitchen and bathroom renovations, and large multi-room transformations. Interior designers consider the entire experience of living in your home, ensuring that every decision supports both the way the space functions and the way it feels.
A full-service interior designer may:
- Provide all of the services listed for Interior Design
- Provide all of the services listed for Kitchen Designer
- Interior Decorating Services
- Coordinate with contractors and trades
- Manage ordering, procurement, and deliveries
- Oversee installation and styling
Full-service interior design brings all of those elements together into one cohesive vision. In this home below, we designed the kitchen, the adjacent living room, including a remodel of the fireplace, the primary bathroom and powder room and dining room. Then we finished the whole space with new furniture and decor
