Denver Life Designer Showhouse 2020

The Denver Life Magazine Designer Showhouse project began in 2013, and has raised nearly $175,000 for its charitable partners. For the last six years and again in 2020, 100 percent of the proceeds went directly to Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver.

Denver Life Magazine partnered with local Caliber Construction and fourteen Denver interior designers who volunteered their time to design spaces in this “market-ready” home in Wash Park. The home was designed by Alvarez Morris Architecture to blend into the historic area near Wash Park and South High School.  The overall interior design concept is Organic Modern.

Despite the global pandemic, the showhouse proceeded and powered through a 5 week delay. Both virtual and in-person tours were able to proceed in order to raise money for Habitat for Humanity.

Tennille Wood of Beautiful Habitat was selected to design the modern kitchen and the kitchen nook spaces.

The overall vision for the kitchen is a modern, slightly edgy space that is still warm and inviting. As a designer, I like to push people out of their comfort zones. We’ve done that a few ways with this kitchen – Ebony and matte gray cabinets, mixing cabinet and countertop materials, and mixing metals. We’ve all seen and done the white kitchen for the last 10 years. I wanted to demonstrate that a black kitchen is functional and dramatic and not the dark cave everyone fears. To soften the black, we’ve incorporated organic elements like natural woods, handmade backsplash tiles, brass and the flowing, organic patterns of the fabrics.

In the Kitchen Nook, my vision was a comfortable and casual space for the family to come together. The banquette offers flexibility in seating a whole group, or one person lounging with your feet up and a cup of coffee. Function is always top of mind with my designs. The back cushion is necessary for a comfortable banquette. By suspending the cushion on leather straps, there is no crevasse where the cushions meet for crumbs to collect. I’ve selected durable family-proof fabrics that are resistant and washable, while still providing loads of pattern, texture and style. You really can have it all!

This kitchen has zones for the whole family to be together, but engaging in different activities. The extended island offers ample prep space on the kitchen side and adequate seating on the living room side. Eliminating wall cabinets and combining storage into tall cabinets means everything is accessible to family members without tripping over each other in the food prep zone. The wood slat dividers are a nod to mid-century modern, but appropriate for 21st century living. The wood slats create a barrier to the dining room, while allowing light from the large front windows.

Who says you have to use neutrals in a kitchen? We incorporated this gorgeous emerald green tile in the backsplash. For a modern take on traditional subway tile, we installed it vertically.

The completed showhouse incorporates red brick to blend beautifully into the historic neighborhood of Washington Park. The home includes 5,422sqft. with 5 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms. The 10 ft ceilings on the main floor and the vaulted ceilings on the second floor contribute to the spacious and light-filled beauty of this home.

It was such an honor to be a part of this special project and to raise much needed funds to support Denver area families.

COVID 19 has proven what I’ve long believed – the home is so important. Our homes are safety, security and sanctuary. In 2020 our homes became offices, schools, home gyms and more. To be able to raise money to help provide Denver families with a home and sanctuary is a true privilege. The families that are helped by Habitat for Humanity are those who have been our heroes in 2020: nurses, first responders and teachers. I am honored to help these Denver families achieve their dreams of home ownership.
