Modernize a 2000s Denver Home

How to Modernize an Early 2000s Denver Home

Ah—homes built in the late 1990’s to early 2000’s… There were definitely some positives: warm finishes, open floor plans, taller ceilings, and larger windows that let in that beautiful Colorado light.

But they also came with… let’s say, some very specific design choices: golden oak cabinets, deep TV niches, and oversized deck-mounted bathtubs.

Kitchen Designs

We’ve updated many early 2000’s homes in the Denver area, and we almost always start with the kitchen. The most common complaints? Golden oak cabinets paired with golden oak floors. In fact, many of our clients have already tried painting over the oak cabinets at some point in the past 20 years. We also frequently see dark countertops, and shorter wall cabinets with soffits  or empty space above.

But there’s another telltale detail that instantly dates these kitchens: the “standard overlay” cabinet door. What does that mean? The noticeable gap around cabinet doors.

Living Rooms

The early 2000’s also ushered in more open-concept living, with family rooms often flowing directly into the kitchen. Here, we typically find a square gas fireplace next to a deep, boxy TV niche. And to top it off, the windows were often covered in heavy shutters, making the whole room feel closed in.

Updating Bathrooms

This wasn’t exclusive to the early 2000’s, but the two most dated features we see in bathrooms are oversized tub decks paired with tiny showers—and, once again, oak cabinetry with limited storage.

The good news? You don’t need to tear everything down to bring your home up to date. Thoughtful design moves can make a 20-year-old home feel fresh, cohesive, and current.

Here are the top 7 changes we make in Denver-area homes.

     1. Taller wall cabinets, simple style and full overlay doors.

Those early 2000 homes have higher ceilings; let’s emphasize them by taking the cabinets all the way up and finishing with a tailored, modern crown molding.

     2. Creative cabinet finishes

You don’t have to use the same cabinets throughout your home. We always mix up the finishes of cabinets in different rooms, and usually within the kitchen itself.

     3. Goodbye tub deck

Add a contemporary freestanding tub and beautiful tub filler to instantly modernize a bathroom. Bonus – this also allows for a larger, more luxurious shower.

     4. Fireplace Facelift

That deep TV niche instantly dates a home.  Instead, add a modern linear fireplace that allows the TV to be mounted above. This creates one strong focal point for your living room design.  Even better, add an “Art TV” in a frame.

     5. Tone down the yellow oak

Note that I say “tone down”.  Most people want to eliminate all the oak in their homes. But a natural oak floor is actually quite beautiful. Often, instead of fully replacing the dated golden oak floor, we simply sand off the terrible old stain, and just cover it in a clear coat. The natural oak is a beautiful and modernized flooring option.

     6. Lighten up window treatments

We have more than 300 days of sunshine in Denver. Why would you block it out with heavy dated shutters.  I’ve already made my case for Letting the Light In

     7. Plan smart upgrades that make daily life easier

A modern home isn’t just about looks — it should allow you to live better.

  • Update lighting with efficient LEDs and dimmers.
  • Add thoughtful storage: built-in mudrooms, pantry systems, and cabinet pullouts
  • Create zones that work better for your family: storage, device charging stations, a “family hub” to keep everyone organized.
