2025 Color Trends

At beautiful Habitat, we are generally anti-trend. Instead, we believe in designing for your own personal style, whatever that may be. If you are intentional with your design and décor, we believe that what you love is always in style.

That being said, I do talk about trends from time to time to advise my clients on how to best incorporate and/or avoid certain trends in order to create a Timeless Interior Design. Let’s talk two big Interior color trends for 2025.

Color Trend 1: The Neutrals are going Brown

Over the past couple of years, we’ve seen the (predictable) shift away from the grays and blacks and more into browns. That has been solidified with the Pantone color of the year: Mocha Mouse.

Interior Design Color Trends and Tips

I wrote an article called Mixing Brown & Black, Beige & Gray in Design & Décor in 2013 and it has remained a top search and blog post for us since the day it was posted. I have updated it a couple of times, but the information is just as relevant. Now, we are just moving in the other direction, from grays and blacks back to browns and beiges.

The color trends come and go each year. When we are talking about neutral colors, the trend cycle is much longer, about a 10-15 year life span. Beautiful Habitat is 18 years old in January. When I started the company, we were well into the browns and beiges trend. Travertine tile and either natural Alder or Espresso stained cabinets were all the rage. This started to shift into blacks, grays, and whites and I wrote the blog about how to use both to keep your home from looking dated.

Creating a Timeless Interior

If you want a timeless home, you can achieve this in 2 ways. The first is to use neutral colors from both the black and brown spectrums, As I advise in that above blog post. This doesn’t entrench you in one camp or the other, ensuring your home will age well. The second option is to just design whit what you like. I have always preferred the blacks and grays. I was using black and gray in my home when travertine, alder and browns were popular. I will continue to decorate my home with black and grays now.  I like what I like and I don’t care about the trends.

And we do this for clients as well. Here are some of our anti-trend designs; designs in which we specifically went against the “popular” interior colors of the moment in order to design to what our clients preferred. While grays and blues were at the height of trends, we had clients that preferred warmer colors and earth tones.

Color Trend 2 – Jewel Tones and Deep Colors

Dark and Moody, Deep and Rich. However you define it, we are seeing a move toward more jewel tones and deep rich colors. It’s a bit of a reaction to all the stark white walls and homes that skyrocketed during Covid.

The Benjamin Moore Color trends include a deep red-brown, blue and green color among the collection. Their chosen color of 2025 is Cinnamon Slate.

Interior Design TrendsSherwin Williams went a different direction for 2025. Instead of naming one color of the year, they created Color Capsules. Their color capsule also includes deeper and darker colors than the past several years.

Professional Interior Design Tips

At Beautiful Habitat, we have always created interior design plans infused with color. And we are often ahead of the color trends. Below are two of our recently completed home designs, both of which embrace more of the deeper colors that will be on trend for 2025.

In this home in Castle Pines, we added a deep green as our wall color in the foyer, then carried into the dining room and living room. The color brings a warmth and richness to the home.

In the Denver home above, our upholstery colors are starting to lean into the jewel tones. Our inspiration started with the drapery fabric, which definitely has some of the Benjamin Moore color of the year: Cinnamon Slate.

The bottom line is that all trends come and go. Nothing is “new”. It’s all cyclical, and somewhat predictable.  You may remember that I taught the History of Architecture and Design class for a Denver College for several years. This was one thing that shocked my students; we could trace back the current trends and see that a version of them had happened several times before in some variation.

We are heading into another era of the brown spectrum for our neutrals and into an era of deeper color and jewel tones. But my advice to you will always be to Design with the colors that you love and you want to live with
