How to Pick a Sofa

A sofa is one of the most important pieces you’ll buy for your home. It anchors the room, sets the tone, and, if you choose well, becomes the place where real life happens. Movie nights, meaningful conversations, afternoon naps… it all lands here.

And if you Google How to Pick a Sofa, you’ll get sound advice on the sofa basics: Frame, Fill, Fabric. These are important, so I’ll also discuss them here, but there is one more important factory I want you to consider – your cushion configuration.

Frame: What You Don’t See Matters Most

Just like the foundation of a home, the frame is the foundation of your sofa, and it’s often the most overlooked detail. A well-constructed frame ensures your sofa holds up over time, maintains its shape, and provides consistent support.

What should you look for? Kiln-dried hardwood frames and high-quality suspension systems, like eight-way hand-tied springs. These details make a significant difference in both comfort and longevity. Materials like plywood or particleboard may reduce upfront cost, but they will not stand the test of time

Fill: Comfort and Longevity

If you’ve ever had a sofa that constantly needed fluffing – or worse, one that felt flat and unsupportive – you’ve experienced the importance of cushion fill.

Foam-only cushions tend to lose their shape over time. Down-only cushions feel luxurious, but require regular maintenance to keep them looking and feeling good.

We recommend Down-wrapped foam. It offers the structure and support of foam with the softness and comfort of down. The result is a sofa you can truly sink into—without it losing its shape after daily use.

Fabric: Looks Good. Wears Better.

Not all upholstery fabrics are created equal. Some look beautiful in a showroom—or on Instagram—but don’t hold up to daily life.  Common complaints are staining, or pilling (the little balls that accumulate with wear, like a cheap sweater).

This is where a knowledge of fabric content and fiber performance is important. The constant improvements in performance fabrics make so many styles available everyone. They’re the quiet workhorse of good design – especially in homes with kids, pets, guests, or simply everyday living.

Performance fabrics are designed to resist stains, wear, and fading, making them a smart, long-term choice. You don’t have to sacrifice style for durability—you just need to choose intentionally.

The sofa basics, or 3F’s are important, but what no one else is talking about is The number and configuration of cushions.

Cushion Configuration

I once had a large 2-seat sofa. And you know what?  Only 2 people ever sat on it – even in the middle of a large party. It ended up being a huge waste of space. Why? Because doubling up on a single cushion feels awkward and no one wants to sit on the crack!

Be aware – the 2 seat design is very popular right now; I see it everywhere. But is that going to support your family or entertaining needs?

Instead, I recommend a sofa design of “Three over three” or a “bench seat”.

Three over Three is just as it sounds – three back cushions over three seats. On the same length of sofa, you can now comfortably sit three people. Seat more of your friends!

Even better, a bench seat is one long cushion – no division. Now seat even more of your friends in the same space!

Side note – a long bench seat can get quite heavy, so it cannot be as easily move a flipped for cleaning.

Design Advice How to Pick a Sofa

How do I know if a sofa is good quality?

Lift a corner. If it is heavy, that  is a good sign that it is a hardwood frame and quality foam cushions. Light as air? That frame might not make it through the holidays.

How Long Should a Sofa Last?

A well-made sofa—built with a solid frame, quality fill, and durable fabric—should last 10 years or more. And sofa’s with a well designed core can be reupholstered if the fabric is worn or dated.

Choose thoughtfully, and your sofa becomes an investment you only make once a decade.
