Designed for the Next Chapter: Retirement Meets Refined Living

Our clients downsized from their family home in Minnesota, moving to Colorado to be near their children and grandchildren. They bought a patio home in a Westminster golf course community. After several years in the smaller home, they decided they were going to stay there and make this their “forever” retirement home. However, the dated home was not working for them.

The small home features a kitchen and living room completely open to one another, yet the builder tried to create separation through an awkward island layout with a raised bar that barely sat 2 people.

Our clients wish list was to make this space the heart of their home; a focus on family and friends with a kitchen that supports meal preparation and a space that is inviting for eating, mingling, playing board games, watching sports, and playing with their two young grandsons.

The old Kitchen layout was awkward with an oddly shaped island that had the range, but no ventilation and no prep space. Our new design moved the cooking zone to the outside wall, with a beautiful hood vent. We then created a large island for meal prep space and hosting family and friends. Our client’s requested a lighter, calming color palette and are especially fond of teal and light blues. This stunning Aqua Quartzite set the tone for the whole design.
To maximize the kitchen storage, and beauty, the Beautiful Habitat team removed soffits and added taller cabinets in a soft taupe and ivory. We designed cabinet panels to cover the refrigerator to blend into the cabinets.
The design features a new induction cooktop with a cabinet paneled hood vent. The backsplash tile is a soft aqua color to compliment the island countertop.
In the adjoining living room, we renovated the fireplace for modern living. The original home had a square fireplace, with the standard TV hole next to it and no mantel. Our design plans created a beautiful fireplace with a traditional mantel above. This allowed for a larger TV. The client’s selected a picture frame TV so they can enjoy artwork, which not watching a game.
You would never know it, but this home is designer to be resistant to sticky fingers and muddy paws. We chose performance fabrics that still feel soft and luxurious and durable surfaces that are easy to clean. They are Barkley and grandson approved.
