FAQs: Full-Service Interior Design
What should I expect when we meet for the first time?

Every design collaboration begins with an in-home consultation, whether it is a one-time meeting or the first step in a full-service interior design or remodeling project.

During this consultation, the project scope and goals are defined. We walk through each room to determine your style and how you want to live.

How can I prepare for the consultation?

Before the meeting, have an open dialog between household partners. Discuss the scope of work, priorities and goals and ensure there is agreement on the points that are important to each partner. Make a list to discuss with us to ensure nothing is forgotten in the excitement of the moment during our meeting.

It’s not essential, but capturing visuals of rooms, design elements, colors, or pieces that you like or are drawn to is really helpful. Pinterest and Houzz are both great tools for capturing ideas for your project. You can also pull ideas from magazines and books. Sharing these with us during the meeting is beneficial.

Have a discussion about the budget and know what you are willing to invest in the project. Ensure you are both in agreement on that amount. Most marriages have a spender and a saver, so it is very important to have this discussion prior to our initial meeting.

Is there an initial project investment fee?

The Beautiful Habitat consultation is ninety minutes, with sixty minutes of intensive discussion and recommendations, followed by thirty minutes to review next steps. The investment is $595.

What’s included in our consultation?

During this consultation, the project scope and goals are defined. We walk through each room to determine your style and how you want to live.

The meeting is customized to your needs and may address a number of interior design questions including:
• Recommendations for room layout, whether that be furniture or a better kitchen flow
• Ideas for new furniture and furnishings, window treatments or lighting
• Help to define a comfortable budget
• Styling and accessorizing tips
• Paint color selection
• Explanation of the design process and what to expect

How long do these projects usually take?

We like to say the relationship between Beautiful Habitat and our clients is a marriage, not a date. We are going to be working together for a while and we’ll get to know quite a bit about each other.

In general, remodeling projects can take six months to two years to complete, while a decorating project will take closer to 4-6 months. The duration of the project is not set in stone and hinges on many factors. If you make decisions quickly, if you are available and responsive, the project will be completed sooner. If you need a little bit more time to mull things over or have limited availability, it could increase the time necessary to complete the project.

It is best to contact us as early as possible to discuss your potential project.

How does full-service interior design differ from hiring a decorator?

Interior design focuses on both the function and the aesthetics of a home. A designer considers how a space flows, how it feels, and how it works long before choosing furniture or fabrics. A qualified interior designer will have a two or four year degree that includes training in space planning, construction fundamentals and kitchen and bathroom design.

Decorating focuses on the visual layer of a space after construction is complete. A decorator helps refine the look of a room by selecting furniture, textiles, and finishing details that bring the space together.

This is an excellent and common question, so we dive deeper in Full-Service Interior Design vs. Decorator: Understanding the Differences

Do you offer 3-D renderings or visualizations?

Yes, our design process includes building a full 3-D model of the rooms we are designing. This includes importing in the cabinets, tiles, furniture, fabrics and materials that are recommended for your home design. We’ve been using 3-D models for over fifteen years and this process allows our clients to be comfortable with the design and every selection before placing the orders.

What makes you different from other Denver or Boulder interior designers?

Beautiful Habitat has been designing homes since 2007 and the team has collectively over thirty years of interior design experience.

The consistent feedback from our clients is that we really listen to be able to understand and interpret each client and their unique interior design style.

Do you handle ordering, tracking, and installation of all furnishings?

Yes, we offer full-service interior design which means that our design team handles every detail including ordering, tracking, delivery scheduling and installation oversight to keep everything aligned with the project timeline. This is a done-for-you service.

We sweat all the small stuff, so that you don’t have to.

How are budgets established and managed throughout the project?

Before we begin work, we ask a lot of questions about your investment amount—not only the specific dollar amount you have to invest, but also your comfort levels within that amount. For example, if you have $75,000 to invest, are you comfortable with spending $25,000 on one piece? Would it make you nervous to have a piece that expensive?

We discuss your wish list and investment amount. If those are out of alignment, and they sometimes are, we discuss what CAN be achieved within your desired budget. We discuss and agree on the priorities of the design to ensure the budget is allocated toward the priorities.

I’m not totally sure what I want or what’s realistic for my home. Can you help?

This is what we love to do—we want to show you the possibilities you’ve never even considered. This is what our past clients have said:

“I was struggling with putting the ideas in my head on paper and didn’t even know what I didn’t know about options for our home. I had never worked with a designer and didn’t know what to expect. The experience and final design are so much better than I expected! I feel you really took the time to get to know my husband and I to create the PERFECT design. We both felt the care level was true and genuine.

I also loved how you hit the mark on what we liked even when we didn’t know what we liked. We had no idea what to choose in different areas and every time you brought out samples it was right on the dot of our style and what we wanted. Working with you made our life so easy in selecting every piece of the design. You made it happen and it was painless.” – J & D • Denver, CO

What makes you different from other Denver or Boulder interior designers who take on new construction and remodels?

Beautiful Habitat has been designing homes since 2007 and the team has collectively over 30 years of interior design experience, with a focus on remodel and construction design planning.

The consistent feedback from our clients is that we really listen to be able to understand and interpret each client and their unique interior design style.

How do you collaborate with architects and builders?

We work with architects early in the design process to collaborate on the best design plan considering both the exterior and the interior of the home.

When the design plans are well established, we bring in the builders to discuss and confirm the feasibility of the designs. Then the builder or general contractor provides the bids and timelines. As we move into the construction phase, the Beautiful Habitat team acts as your liaison with the GC. We make sure they have all the materials when they need them and that the designs are being built as intended.

Can you help us evaluate contractor bids?

Yes. One major mistake that homeowners make is that they try to get bids before having a clear design plan. That will always result in wildly different prices. Once we have a design plan, we help you to review and navigate contractor bids.

Kitchen Design

Most kitchens have at least one awkward quirk—a tight corner, a fridge that blocks the flow, a coffee station everyone crowds around in the morning. It may not seem like a big deal…until you bump into someone mid-stride and send a fresh pan of muffins flying.

We design elegant kitchens that feel as good as they look, shaping layouts around your daily rhythms so the space moves naturally and comfortably. Then we work closely with cabinetmakers, contractors, and installers to bring those plans to life, so every finish and detail supports the way you live.

FAQs: Kitchen Design
What is the difference between an interior designer and a kitchen designer?

Interior design focuses on both the function and the aesthetics of a home. A designer considers how a space flows, how it feels, and how it works long before choosing furniture or fabrics. A qualified interior designer will have a 2- or 4-year degree that includes training in space planning, construction fundamentals, and kitchen and bathroom design.

While kitchen designers are experts in cabinetry, their scope is usually limited to the kitchen itself and the products their showroom carries. They may not address how the kitchen relates to the rest of the home, architectural changes outside cabinetry, lighting plans beyond basic fixtures, or flooring and adjacent living spaces.
Kitchen designers are specialists – they really know their cabinet lines and how to design a very functional kitchen. They may or may not have interior design education – this can vary.

This is an excellent and common question, so we dive deeper in Full-Service Interior Design vs. Kitchen Designer: Understanding the Differences

What makes you different from other Denver or Boulder kitchen designers?

Beautiful Habitat has been designing homes since 2007 and the team has collectively over 30 years of interior design experience, with a focus on remodel and construction design planning. We are very experienced in kitchen designs. However, we can go beyond most kitchen designers in that we can design the full home and furnishing as well. If you have an open concept home, we can help you with everything, not just the kitchen.

We have been a part of the National Kitchen & Bath Association since 2011.

Do you coordinate with contractors?

When the design plans are well established, we bring in the builder or general contractor to discuss and confirm the feasibility of the designs. Then the builder or GC provides the bids and timelines. As we move into the construction phase, the Beautiful Habitat team acts as your liaison with the GC. We make sure they have all the materials when they need them and that the designs are being built as intended.

Can you help us determine what’s worth investing in during a kitchen remodel?

Yes. As part of our discovery process, we will share the real budgets from recent home design projects. You’ll see what your dream kitchen will cost and we’ll establish what kitchen elements are the higher priorities for you and your family.

Where should we splurge vs. save in kitchen design?

That depends on each client and home. Some clients are true home chefs and they should splurge on the appliances. Other clients value customized storage, and want every item to have its place, and they should splurge on cabinets.

Each design is customized to the client and what is most important to them in their home remodel.

We start every design project with a deeper dive into your priorities so we can best advise you where to spend to bring you the greatest return on your investment.

Our Design Process

We follow the same process for every project, whether it’s a single room or an entire home. Here’s how it works:

Project Initiation

1.

Project Initiation

This is where we get to know you and your home. We meet, walk the space, and talk through what’s working, what isn’t, and what you’re hoping for. The goal is to clearly define the scope of your project and set a strong design direction that reflects what matters most to you.

Research, Design, & Presentation

2.

Research, Design, & Presentation

Once we understand you and your space, the creative work begins. We develop the overall vision, collaborate with vendors and trades, and thoughtfully curate every element of the design. It all comes together during your design presentation, where you’ll see drawings, review materials, and walk through your home in 3D.

Procurement

3.

Procurement

We’ll take it from here! Orders are placed, deliveries are tracked, furnishings are received and stored, and installations are scheduled. You don’t need to manage a thing or keep tabs on timelines. We’ve got it covered.

Construction Support <br/>(When Applicable)

4.

Construction Support
(When Applicable)

If your project includes construction, we’ll work alongside trades professionals to keep an eye on progress and act as your liaison. This turnkey approach is perfect for clients who might not live near their job site and need a partner they can count on.

Execution & Project Completion

5.

Execution & Project Completion

Furniture and decor are received, inspected, and prepped. After installation, we handle any final adjustments and punch list items. The project officially wraps with a closure meeting, and hooray! You’ve now got a beautiful habitat all your own.
